year one

Last year {on this weekend} Justin and I married in a picturesque eastern coastal town that we quickly fell in love with after spending two weeks exploring all that Wilmington had to offer two years prior. Twenty five of our closest friends and family members enjoyed a weekend on the beautiful beaches of NC, experienced a haunted pub crawl lead by the fearless {and very enthusiastic} Digby, PBR ran through our veins, where we all squeezed {and I’m sure exceeded optimum capacity} in a Matrix, and foosball entertained the guys for hours on end {the list can go on and on and on but I’ll stop}.

Justin and I spent months contemplating on where, when and how we should get married. Knowing we wanted a small, intimate feel with only those we love the most in this world in attendance, we decided {after the idea of Mexico began to sound too predictable and all the venues around Austin started to look the same} on Wilmington. It took no time at all for us to then decide on… when: whenever the Airlie Gardens had an availability, where: ceremony under the 400 yr old oak tree and reception at Level 5, how: with the help of Courtney at Stellar Events. To make a long story short, Sunday, May 31, 2009, {our wedding day} was perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing and would love to relive it every day for my life. Our BIG day was featured on Style Me Pretty… enjoy the photos here, here and here {oh, and our day afters here} and have a fantastic weekend. I’ll see you Tuesday!

marfa, on my mind

A lonely, quaint and dusty western town turned hip and stylish destination spot for artists and yuppies alike. For some reason Marfa has been on my mind and topic of conversations with friends as of late so, what the heck, why not use the charming town as inspiration…

escapes

Growing up I had a tree house where all the “cool” neighborhood girls would gather to meet and discuss very important happenings in our cul-de-sac. Of course, boys were not allowed so my brother and his friends would find a way to reclaim their boys-only tree house-- usually with the threat and use of super soakers. Not cool. I have a feeling if I had decorated the tree house with frilly, flowery fabrics us girls would have had no interruptions from silly boys. If only…

a mister's {early} bday

May 31. My hub’s birthday.
May 31. Our wedding anniversary.

Although he says that I’m the best birthday gift he has ever received, I still can’t help but feel sad that his day of birth is now over shadowed by our anniversary. This is why this weekend I am taking him on a little Cen-Tex getaway in {early} celebration of him turning two-eight. I can’t wait to run away with the man of my dreams, keeper of my heart, and generally awesome human being. happy birthday to you my love. big xoxo's.

a floral explosion

Talk about inspiration overflow! Pretty, sweet, and simply stunningly lovely...

I’ll probably never shake my infatuation with hats. Vintage inspired hats in particular…

soothing eye candy

A treat for certain, that I couldn't contain! Isn't this pastel-n-sorbet hued NoaNoa lookbook so calm and beautiful? Blossom pink and coral, sugary sweet blue, fresh white, cheery yellow and green, orchids, and seaside charm...I long for those easy, breezy, wind-blown hair days and the sound of waves...

etsy junkie

This post may be three days past due, but I’m back to share my top favs from Austin’s first Renegade Art Fair. Here we go…

My best friend {Ashley} would have swooned and drooled and then eventually purchased one of these former Argentinean bus seats turned bags.

Over three years ago my mister and I took a road trip to NC, stopping in small towns along the way. In a small boutique in Savannah, GA I spotted a koi fish {major obsession at the time, btw} necklace well over $100. To surprise me he bought it and I wore that fish like it was going out of style. So you could imagine how ecstatic I was when I spotted {and bought} this for only $25.

There is no doubt if I had a baby she would be wearing this or he would be sleeping in a room with these on the wall.

Yes, I did. I splurged and got one of these. And I don’t regret it, not one bit!

Clean, fresh, whimiscal = Leah Duncan’s art. Check out her custom made invitations… she did mine.

Pretty illistrations.

craft-aholic

At last! Friday has come back around! And I am soooo excited because this Saturday and Sunday Austin is holding its first ever Renegade Craft Fair. You can bet I will be there... both days. If I was allowed I’d probably sleep there too, in hopes of osmoses-ly absorbing all the craft, design and art knowledge, as well as tips and tricks of the indie- craft superstars. In between vendor booth hopping and shopping, be sure to stop by the free workshops and DIY demostrations held throughout the two days of craft-mania. I'll see you there!

a deco inspiration

Mirrors, silhouettes, blacks, whites, silver accent pieces, pops of color… yep, I’m starting to see the stylish theme of Art Deco making its way into weddings. If you had asked me a year ago and I would have cringed at the thought, but today I’m all for it.

eagle fight never dies

It’s that time of year when Senior students gather on the football field dressed in their blue (bright, shiney blue) gowns, waiting for 600 other student names to be called, then grab their graduation cap and throw it in the air. Fair warning: the cap throwing never works like it does in the movies, not all students throw the hat at the same time. Some too early, some way too late. So don’t expect too much from this must-do tradition! Just walk with your head held high as you accept that special piece of paper, you made it through some really awkward years and the best are still to come. Congratulations to all our 2010 Georgetown High School graduates! This one’s for you!

a pretty mess

Oh my! Mayhem! Between the beginning of wedding season and the rush of graduation parties, things have been pleasantly hectic around here. The shop is an organized mess as a ten foot colonnade stands in the middle, consuming the beautiful space. I guess I’ll “allow” Justin to gawk at his handy work for another day before the colonnade finds a new home, far away from my lovely room. Last week I cheated you all out of my third obsession and I sure do apologize for that, but I will make it up to you. To be reviled this week: my third but definitely not last current obsession, a Fightin’ Eagle tablescape for all you Georgetown graduates and an Art Deco inspiration board. Stay tuned…

fun finds friday

Yesterday was crazy, so please pardon my absence in the blogosphere.

It’s finally Friday and so far so GREAT! While running errands this morning I turned my radio way up while listening to the Backstreet Boys and Nsync (may you RIP) back to back, I’m wearing my favorite new outfit (this with a silk tank from Madewell, dark jeans and grey slide-ons) and as I was catching up on my blog stalking for the week I discovered these fun finds…

how cute are these?!

the allure of stripes

“yikes, stripes...Fruit Stripe Gum... the yummy fruity one... a pocket full of fun”… I’m the only one that thinks of this jingle when the word “stripes” is spoken?! More than likely I am, but that’s okay. I loved that gum growing up! The product proudly holds claim that it is the only gum with painted-on stripes. Completely notorious for its strong but fleeting flavor. Maybe it was my childhood of stuffing my face with Fruit Stripe Gum that triggered my current obsession with stripes. Whatever it was, or is, stripes are fantastic just see for yourself…

a minty fixation

I often notice the decorative accents in a clothing store before the clothes themselves. I know weird, right?! Anthropologie is the #1 store where I find myself admiring and investigating the instillations while the clothing take a backseat to the undeniably awing window creations. But I must have been a little off this weekend, because as I entered Madwell I walked passed installments of hot air balloons made out of scarves. Yeah, I simply walked on passed what I thought was my current obsession until my husband eagerly pointed them out. They were nothing short of awesome.

Since that day I started to reevaluate my list of obsessions. After narrowing it down to three current favorites I decided to share through inspiration boards. Today, mint. The color some people may refer to as seafoam has topped my list of current loves. This color will certainly find its way into my closet, tablescapes and home décor very soon.

inside edition

Just as I predicted, the weekend passed by way too fast. But I still enjoyed the short lived relaxation of the days spent dining out on SoCo, shopping, searching for our next home and basking in the fantastic weather before it becomes too hot to bare! Now back to weddings, parties and my favorite part of it all: being creative.

Two weeks have passed, so I figured it was finally time to share some photos from our grand opening. Enjoy!

It's no big secret that weekends go by WAY too fast. So take joy in the little free time you may have with the ones you love. Now I'm off to set up for a fabulous Friday wedding! So long til Monday!

a day at the races

Horses, jockeys, betting followed by lots of yelling and big hats only mean one thing… it’s Kentucky Derby time! With only two days remaining until the winner of the Triple Crown is showered with prizes and glory, I decided it’s only fitting to pay homage to the most exciting two minutes of sports (or so they say!). Rich brown tones and rustic- vintage accents can make any wedding Triple Crown worthy…

crab toe

And I’m back from my perfectly relaxing and too much fun getaway. Although I am happy to return to my superb husband, three cats and a comfy cozy home, I still woke a bit sad that there wasn’t an ocean view outside my window or knowing that I won’t be making my morning rounds to visit my favorite hotel employees -- who I now refer to as my friends. We achieved all we set out to accomplish over our four days in Jamaica… share lots of laughs, pamper ourselves in spa, get kissed by the sun (and by kissed I mean slightly burned, but fingers crossed that it will soon tan), make friends with locals (from Mona to Shaka and Andrew to M… we miss you all), learn Patwa (okay, maybe just the bad words!), experience new foods (on and off the streets), spend countless hours on the beach, bargain for the best deals and leave with no regret or longing to experience more, for we did it all and enjoyed every moment of it.

Please forgive me; today my brain is still on vacation. Seriously, when I got in my car this morning it took me a minute to remember how to drive! Today I will try to pull myself together. Tomorrow I will share amazing wedding inspirations.

Interesting side note: instead of calling one’s messing handwriting “chicken scratch” in Jamaica they say “crab toe”.

The three things you should definitely do in life...

Hello again.  It's me, Justin, writing for the last time before the anticipated return of Katy later this evening.  And boy, I can't wait.  As I'm sure you can't either.

Katy will be back with you guys tomorrow with some more brilliant design inspirations and tid-bits about our growing business.  But until then, I thought I'd share with you some thoughts I had while watching...wait for it...some romantic comedies, and some just plain romance...movies over the weekend.  Yes, I will be the first to admit I am a sucker for those movies.  I was actually the founding member of the H.R.A.  Inquire within.

But don't worry, I also grabbed The Fourth Kind and A Perfect Getaway at the local Blockbuster to go along with what most guys and girls alike would consider, Chick Flicks.

But back to my point, while watching these movies, mainly The Timetraveler's Wife, and realizing how much bigger our home feels when you are alone in it for several days, I decided that there are really three things you should definitely do in life.

1.) Fall in love.  First, with yourself.  You are the only one that has to live and be happy with yourself your entire life, so you might as well be exactly who you are and love it.  And once you've fallen in love with yourself, fall in love.  With another.  I'm talking head-over-heels kind of stuff.  Find that best friend of yours.  The one you can be that exact person you are with.  And they love you for it.  That person you miss when they are away for only a little while.  The one when you close your eyes you can see your entire life in front of you with.  The one who makes you smile, your heart smile, with just a simple look.  The one you can say, as quoted from Elizabethtown, "I can't imagine a world without you."

There are great loves out there like that.  It takes time.  It takes effort.  It takes making a lot of mistakes to get to them.  But once you find them, you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.  And you'll be happier than you've ever been.

But fall in love.  And don't be afraid to do it.  It's worth it.  I assure you.

2.) Once you fall in love, take a road trip.  Whether you plan every second of it out or just start driving down the highway, run away for a bit.  Drop everything.  Your job.  Your worries.  Everything.  And just go.  I promise you, it will be one of those things that you talk about for the rest of your life.  And it will make you see the world in a whole different way.  About what's important.  And what's not.  About relationships.  About life.

But take a road trip.  Anywhere.

3.) Do something good.  It always seems as though we become so consumed in our own, busy lives that we never take the time to look at the world around us.  We never look to see how we might help others.  Change the world.

Whether it is starting a global mission to put shoes on peoples' feet like Blake is doing with Toms Shoes (http://www.toms.com/), or just going down to the local soup kitchen once a week to help feed the hungry, do something for someone else.  We are all blessed.  Bless others.

You never know when your effort could change the world for all time.

I hope you all have an excellent start to your work week.

Why not make it a date night?

Ask your significant other out on a date every now and then.  Not, hey let's go grab some food.  Or, want to go catch that new movie?  An actual date.  Like at the beginning of your relationship.  Call or text or even better yet, write a note asking them out on an actual date.  "I'll pick you up at 7.  Dress is business casual."

And then get creative.  Who says you have to go slam down a hundred and fifty bucks on a steak that is probably a little overcooked over a bed of way too buttery asparagus.  Who even eats asparagus.  And then another 9 bucks a pop at the theatre.  Just to get in.  Followed by another 12 to 15 on what you considered a dessert back in middle school.  Milk duds with a side of twizzlers and a 48 oz Dr. Pepper.

And we haven't even covered any "adult" drinks.  Those can blow your budget in a second.

Instead, try this.  Ask your significant other out on a date.  Then plan the date at home.

Show up to the door at the time you've told them you'd pick them up, dressed nicely in a pressed, button-down shirt and some designer jeans (or a dress is you ladies are doing the planning) with a freshly picked flower.  Drive them around the block, and then head back home.

Creating a romantic, intimate, one-of-a-kind, she/he will be talking about it for weeks kind of date at home is easy.  It just takes some planning.  And I little hard work.  But it will totally be worth it.

Start by planning the look and feel you want.  And decide on the budget, of course.  If you have the means, go out and rent some linens for your table to dress it up a little.  Or even rent a small table for a more intimate dinner.  Grab some china and some fancy silverware and glassware.  All this will help set the mood and create a luxury, 5-star restaurant in your own home.  You can be in and out of the rental shop with the goods for a premier dinner for well under thirty bucks.  But they will have thought you'd spent hundreds.

Next, planning the menu.  Go back through the Rolodex that is in your head and create a menu that is both simple, yet something perfect for your other's taste buds.  Don't be intimidated to cook.  Trust me, I survived on frozen pizzas and McDonald's in college, and I can still slam out some pretty tasty dinners.  But keep it simple, stick to the recipes (you can find recipes for anything online), and just do it.  BAM!

Don't forget dessert.  This is the part everyone really craves for anyway.  And it can be the easiest to pull off.  Want to set the mood outside to be paired with your dessert?  String some lights through some trees or from anything you can.  Go to your local hardware store or nursery and pick up a few bunches of flowers (to add color and for the feel of a garden) and some paver stones (to create a fire pit).  Set out a blanket and pillows under the strings of light so they appear to be stars twinkling from the heavens.  Build your fire pit close by for warmth in the night, and so you can roast marsh mellows for smores!  Yes, smores are awesome.

If you want a dessert that is a bit more sophisticated, melt some chocolate bars over the stove and mix them with chopped fruits.  You can never go wrong with chocolate.  And for your "adult" drinks, you can always grab a cheap bottle of champagne and a gallon of orange juice for mimosas.  Or, if you are my wife, a bottle of champagne, a bottle of gin, and some fresh lemon twist to create a French 75.  Either taste great with chocolate.

To cap off your romantic evening at home, plan something fun.  Something different.  Play an old board game that you haven't played since childhood.  If you are into building puzzles, build one together.  If you want something a bit more extravagant, rent a projector and screen and pretend you are at the drive-in and watch a double-feature while cuddling under the stars.

Any way you go, planning a romantic date night at home is always fun, relaxing, and ultimately perfectly intimate.  And it won't break the bank.  But she/he won't ever know.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Events that tell a story. Your story.

I guess I should begin by introducing myself.  So, hello.  Hi.  Good morning.  Nice to meet you.  I'm Justin, Katy's husband and admirer.  I'm young, but not too young, love to wear jeans and a hoodie, am addicted to mashed potatoes, french fries, sweet potato french fries, really anything fried, and by the age of 13 had invented those tennis shoes with the wheels on them.  Not really.

But I did graduate with a degree in film from the University of Texas in Austin, have written two novels, worked on the set of some movies you probably have never heard about and some that you've probably seen in the theatre, gotten married in the most romantic place in the world (in my humble opinion), and now am excited to be working alongside my wife making others' events magical.  Seriously, any of you out there that have my wife design your event are truly lucky because she is a true talent.  She amazes me every day.

So most of you now are probably now wondering why I'm blabbing about all of this and wondering if there is a point to my writings, and I assure you there is, and that eventually I will get to it. But it all begins just several years ago.  When I asked my future wife to run away with me.  To quit her job, that she most certainly hated anyway, and to just drive off into the sunrise.  So we did.  She quit the job she most certainly hated and I hung up my hat in the film industry.  And we drove.  And after about a week and three thousand some odd miles later, we ended up in this place that just welcomes you and makes you feel like you've finally made it home.  A place that has  cobble-stone streets and bistros that serve healthy treats at tables that line a steam-boat filled river.  Old antebellum mansions criss-cross streets and the sun sparkles through the canopy of mighty oaks that layer the skies with crisp greens.  And the best.  Walking out upon a pier and watching swans dance across the calm waters as the sun sets on another day.

Two years later, this would become the backdrop of our wedding weekend with family and our closest friends.  And I guess that becomes my moral of the story.  My point.  My suggestion.

Make your day yours.  Make your day or event memorable so that you can think back to it years from now and still imagine it as though it happened only moments ago.  Make it comfortable.  Personal.  Fun.  Make it tell a story.  Your story.  A picture worth taking.  A story you tell your kids over a hot cup of cocoa by the fire twenty years from now when they start bringing their significant others around.

But make it yours.  Own it.  If you are into film and your favorite night of the week is Saturday night because you know it is date night and your lovely boyfriend will take you to a movie at Alamo, make your event reflect that part of you.  Have an outside screening at your event.  Rent a screen and a projector or just put up a simple white sheet and show some of your favorite movies.  Add a candy bar and popcorn machine and make it that much more fun.  Or have us go out and find old film reels and incorporate them as your seating cards.  Use vintage movie posters as backdrops.  But just make it your own.  Feel comfortable at your event so that everyone has a great time.  Because your event is your celebration.

So today I use this picture from our photographer
at Millie Holloman Studios in Wilmington, North
Carolina to tell our story.  It is a photo that captures
the feel of our wedding.  An elegant charm that subtlety says Old South Vintage.

I think back to our wedding and how simple and pure, but uniquely elegant it was.  All because we owned it.  We made it tell the story of us.  And a month-long road trip we had taken long ago.

seaside adventure

We all need to get away sometimes and my time is now! After countless hours spent in the creation of the event wonderland that is Sweet Sunday Events, I’m taking an extended weekend off to relax Jamaican style. Although I am so thrilled about fun in the sun with unlimited drinks, I can’t help but feel a bit hesitant in leaving the business and my brides for five days. But I know I can rest assure knowing it is in the good hands of a hopeless romantic, conspiracy theory obsessed, McDonald’s loving, highly intelligent, artistic business man. This man, my mister, my magnificent husband and love of my life, Justin will blog as I am away. What he will blog about is a complete mystery to not only you, but to me as well. Just sit back and enjoy the posts to come! See you Tuesday.

location, location, location

To some, scouting out the perfect location for an engagement or bridal photography session can be just as difficult as choosing the precise dress for all six of your bridesmaids, all of which have completely different body types, and hoping they all approve of your calculated selection. I may not be able to prevent the inevitable bridesmaid dress drama, but I can definitely help in the discovery of picture perfect settings.

I came across this amazing prop house which is rented out for photo shoots. But before you get too excited… Good news: it’s absolutely perfect for the vintage-modern bride, Bad news: it is found out of the States. Back to good news: So that got me thinking about places I’ve been in Austin that are comparable to the well-designed Castle Gibson. If you are looking for…

an old, creaky house with peeled-off paint, exposed walls, and spaces that are gloriously destroyed then check out Lustre Pearl. While there be sure to grab a hula hoop as your photographer snaps away!

decor that is modern yet rustic, wood panel walls and plush leather furnishings then stop by Lustre Pearl’s brother bar, Clive Bar.

junk yard finds outside and mixed-matched furniture inside then the full of character coffee shop of Spider House is where you need to be.

what's old is new

A big THANKS to all the chamber members, business owners and brides that came out to our grand opening event yesterday. The set up and design was executed just as I imagined. D-eeelicious treats from Paige’s Bakeshop where a huge hit and oh so yummy! I can’t wait to share all the picture perfect snapshots of our space and the event which were taken by Cory of Jackson Wright Photography. If you are looking for a cake designer or photographer then look no more! These two professionals are a pleasure to work with and have an artistic eye for detail.

After a long, hectic week, nothing could be better than laughing my butt off while watching Chelsea Handler live doing what she does best. I hope you, too, enjoy a weekend of laughter. Until then, here is some motivation for brides in planning... vintage inspired with charming, romantic details--- this inspiration board has it all!

if you dare

From the clothes I wear to my home décor, I gravitate to more understated, muted colors. For some reason I’ve never been a huge fan of bright colors... but these two inspiration boards may have just changed my mind completely. They are so vividly brilliant with bold colors that scream FUN with a touch of class!

hamptons sleek

Do you partake in highly considered tennis matches while decked out in the trendiest tennis wear in the early afternoon, followed by tea and a steady flow of the latest gossip just to be certain it is not you they all talk about? Then you might be a New York yuppie living life as a preppy Central Texan. And I welcome you with open arms because, to me, this is your style and I LOVE it...

a little bit country

Ahhh Monday, we meet again. Welcome back from what I hope was a successful weekend! For me, Saturday and Sunday were just another day at the office. Giving up my weekend was totally worth it as I breathe a sigh of relief at the sight of freshly inked checkmarks on my list of “to do’s”! Today we begin the week by tying up loose ends in preparation for Thursday’s celebrations. Be sure to find time to stop by and visit our newly renovated storefront!

Now, let’s talk color. First it was yellow and white. Two weeks later it was sage and cream. Then ice pink, blue and silver. See a pattern occurring?! As your mood changes, so does your color choices? Been there, done that. In fact, I finally decided to have my bridesmaids wear various styled dresses in different colors because I just couldn’t make up my mind. This was the best choice I could have made, but for other brides it’s important to stick with a few colors. Some of the most beautiful weddings are the simplest. Because of this, I am dedicating this week’s blogs to three toned decor and sharing with you inspiration boards that reflect simple, classic and elegant affairs.

In the words of Coco Chanel, “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop; look in the mirror, and remove one item”. Now apply this to an event and this is what you get…

a bird's eye view

There were trapeze artists, contortionists, fire and knife dancers, but all I could focus on were the Old Birds that wondered aimlessly around the stage and throughout the crowd during Cirque De Soleil’s Alegria show. I completely agree, they are a bit (okay, okay A LOT bit) creepy at first sight. But after analyzing the fascinating creations for hours I began to love so much about them. The color recipe used in the design of the costumes… feathers, trimmings and jewels, oh my!… the leggings that only a brave soul would sport…and of course, the funky-n-fun head accessories.

Straight from Cirque Du Soleil: The nostalgic Old Birds observe the goings on as though they were still young and beautiful and the future was still theirs. They admire their reflections in mirror-less frames but are only empty shells, shadows of their former selves. They are the old aristocracy, still convinced of their power and beauty. But they are twisted, deformed and ugly. They wear fanciful hats and hide behind their flamboyant costumes in rich tones of mauve, green and gold, covered with lace, jewels and embroidery.

Needless to say, these Old Birds inspired me. This is an inspiration board in admiration of the eerie, but extremely appealing birds…

porcelain goddess

Okay, people...Let’s dish. Literally. Elbows off the table. The right fork for the right course. Sip don’t slurp. At certain places, dining out might as well come with a rule book. But at home, eat as you may. As long as you have uniquely striking china no one will notice you are using your shirt as a napkin.

This time last year I was in search of my dream fine china place setting to add to my wedding registry. I came across the pattern below and the search was O-V-E-R.Done.Fin. In my opinion, Bloomingdale’s has the most exquisite china with trendy, yet classic patterns that stay fashionable throughout the years. Good luck searching for your perfect china!

introducing {drum roll please}...

Let’s face it. The CW has produced a long list of guilty pleasure television shows that we can’t help but watch. As much as I may try to avoid her, somehow the queen of narcissism finds her way onto my screen. If there is anything Tyra (along with her inferior sidekicks Miss J, Jay Emanuel and Nigel Barker) have taught us over 13 seasons of America’s Next Top Model is that lighting is important. To be a model one should become skilled in lighting so that shadows do not ruin the countless frames taken of each single pose.

So, here I go... ripping a page straight out of the ANTM handbook, I proclaim the importance of lighting in your event. Illuminating every table, suspended from the ceiling, enveloped in trees. Lighting adds the romantic feeling every wedding seeks to achieve. Sweet Sunday Events offers a variety of lanterns and lighting frills for any event décor style. I’m so happy to now introduce our most recent lighting additions...

Left to Right: Nautical Lantern $5.00, Square Base Pillar $8.00, Malta Lantern $5.00(also available in large $10.00), Large Avery Hurricane $10.00, Small Avery Hurricane $5.00, middle: Whirly Candle Holder $1.00.

hoppy easter weekend

Sunday in the park with friends. Road tripping it to the coast. Quality time with family. Cuddling with man's (and woman's) best friend. Watching a weekend marathon of your favorite show. Whatever you do, wherever you go (or don't go), whoever you spend your weekend with... may you enjoy every moment!
